Using Presentation Apps: Sample Assignment from Guest Blogger

I am very fortunate to work with such great people.  A co-worker at another High School in the district received a classroom set of ipads the same time I did.  We have been able to share ideas, brainstorm, and problem solve together.  She comes up with really great lessons, she's know for them!  I have asked her to be a guest blogger.

Foods and Nutrition II Performance Task

Goal:

Your task is to create a presentation to teach about the food customs of a Latin American country.

Role

You are a volunteer teacher at a local community center.

Audience:

The target audience is middle school and high school age students participating in an after school cooking program.

Situation:

The challenge is to create an after school program to teach local students about food and culture.  You will start by focusing on the food customs of Latin American countries.

Purpose/Product:

You want to help the students in the after school program learn about new cultures and have new food experiences. You will be creating a presentation to teach about a Latin American country. You will also be choosing a food to prepare from that country. That food or recipe should be a traditional food from that country.

Standards and Criteria for Success:

Your presentation needs to include

·        A description of the country. What is the country like? Who are the people, what are some customs, what is the land like, what language is spoken, etc.

·        Information about the food customs or traditions of your country? For example how holidays are celebrated, when meals are served, who is involved in preparing meals etc.

·        A description of the ingredients commonly used in the country

·        A recipe that would represent your country.  If you had to choose a recipe to be the national dish of your country what would it be? Make sure to describe that dish

You can use a presentation app such as Haiku Deck, Prezi, Sock Puppets, Tellagami, 30 Hands, or Videolicious to prepare your presentation.

4	The presentation includes all the required elements as well as additional information. Information presented in logical, interesting sequence which audience can follow. Used time well during class. Focused on the project. Did not distract others
3	The presentation includes all the required elements Information presented in logical sequence which audience can follow. Used time well during class. Usually focused on the project and did not distract others.
2	The presentation is missing 1 of the required elements Audience has difficulty following presentation because it jumps around or goes off track. It is not presented in a logical sequence. Used some of the time well. Some focus on the project, but sometimes distracted others.
1	Several of the required elements are missing Audience cannot understand presentation because there is no sequence of information. Did not use class time well, and/or often was a distraction to others.
